Visiting your parents in assisted living is a deeply personal decision, shaped by their unique needs, personality, health, as well as your availability and location. The transition from independent living to receiving assistance can be emotional for both you and your parents. This guide is designed to help you navigate the process and determine a visitation schedule that fosters well-being and strengthens your connection with your loved ones.
Assessing Their Needs and Preferences
To determine how often to visit, begin by understanding your parents’ individual needs. Some individuals enjoy regular social interactions and look forward to frequent visits, while others may prefer solitude and appreciate more independence. Pay close attention to their emotional and physical health, and listen to their preferences regarding socializing.
For parents with conditions such as dementia or Alzheimer’s, more frequent visits may offer the comfort and routine they need. On the other hand, for parents who are more independent and actively engaged in the community, fewer visits may be appropriate.
Quality of Time Over Quantity
When planning visits, prioritize the quality of time spent together over the frequency of visits. Meaningful activities, such as having a meal, engaging in a favorite hobby, or attending community events, can enrich your time and create lasting memories. The goal is to focus on deepening the bond, not just fulfilling a schedule.
Consistency also plays an important role. Once you’ve established a visiting routine, try to keep it as consistent as possible. Predictable visits provide stability and something for your parents to look forward to.
Incorporating Other Family Members
Sharing visitation responsibilities with family members can alleviate pressure and provide your parents with wider emotional support. Encourage siblings, grandchildren, and extended family members to visit. This not only lightens the load, but also offers your parents various interactions and perspectives.
Consider planning family events or gatherings within the assisted living community. These occasions can strengthen family ties and ensure your parents feel connected to their broader family network.
Considering Distance and Availability
Your proximity to the facility can significantly influence how often you can visit. If you live far away, regular visits might be difficult, but you can compensate with longer visits when you visit or maintain regular virtual communication through phone or video calls. These alternative connections can help you stay in touch even when in-person visits are impossible.
For those who live nearby, shorter but more frequent visits may be easier to schedule. Even a brief visit can have a meaningful impact. Sometimes, it’s the simple things—like a cup of coffee or a short walk—that matter most.
Remaining Flexible as Needs Evolve
Your parents’ needs will evolve over time. Changes in health, emotional well-being, or the facility’s policies may affect how often you should visit. Be flexible and adjust your schedule as necessary to accommodate these changes.
Regularly check in with the facility’s staff to stay informed about your parents’ care and any updates regarding their needs. This helps ensure you’re providing the right kind of support during each visit.
Promoting Emotional Health Through Regular Visits
Visiting your parents regularly can positively impact their emotional well-being. These visits not only provide companionship, but also reinforce that they are still an important part of your life. Regular interaction can help reduce feelings of loneliness and isolation, which can happen when adjusting to a new setting.
Engage in meaningful conversations, share family news, or reminisce about happy memories. Keeping these emotional connections strong can significantly contribute to their happiness and sense of security.

Touring Assisted Living Facilities
If you’re in the process of choosing an assisted living facility for your loved one, taking a tour is an essential step. Touring facilities gives you the opportunity to assess the environment, meet the staff, and get a feel for the community culture.
During the tour, ask about visitation policies and how the facility accommodates family participation. Many communities encourage family involvement and host events to foster stronger relationships between residents and their loved ones. Also, inquire about how the facility communicates updates on your parents’ care, so that you can stay well-informed and plan your visits accordingly.
Making the Right Decision for Your Loved One
Determining the right visitation schedule for your parents in assisted living is all about balancing their needs with your availability. Regular visits are crucial for maintaining emotional connections, but focusing on quality time is equally important. By staying attuned to your parents’ preferences, involving other family members, and remaining flexible, you can create a visitation routine that works well for everyone.
If you’re in the process of finding the right assisted living community for your loved one, we invite you to schedule a tour at Peregrine Senior Living. Spent the morning up the road at Farnsworth middle school for an outing! This is our 3rd year coming here for a valentines craft that Lisa Watson facilitates her students to do with us and it was so sweet! The students were all so great with our residents and our residents had the best time with them! They also had the room next door play their instruments for us which was great as well! Thank you so much to the amazing students and teachers there that made our residents feel so special this morning! They’ve been talking about it all day and we look forward to it every year! 💕😊 ...
