As our parents age, it’s natural to be concerned about their well-being and financial security. One increasingly common issue is the tendency for elderly individuals to give away money, often without fully understanding the consequences. This behaviour can stem from a variety of reasons, including cognitive decline, emotional factors, or susceptibility to scams. At Peregrine Senior Living Guilderland, we understand the complexities of caring for an aging parent and the challenges that come with keeping up financial stability.
Understanding the Reasons Behind Giving Money Away
Cognitive Decline and Dementia
One of the most significant factors contributing to an elderly parent giving away money is cognitive decline. Conditions like dementia and Alzheimer’s disease can impair judgment and decision-making abilities. An individual suffering from these conditions may not fully grasp the implications of their financial decisions, leading to impulsive generosity or susceptibility to financial scams.
Emotional Factors
Emotional well-being plays a crucial role in financial decision-making. Loneliness, a desire for attention, or feelings of guilt can lead elderly parents to give away money as a means of seeking companionship or alleviating emotional burdens. Understanding these emotional triggers can help in addressing the root cause of their behavior.
Susceptibility to Scams
Elderly individuals are often targeted by scammers who exploit their trust and vulnerabilities. Whether it’s through phone calls, emails, or even in-person interactions, these scams can lead to significant financial losses. Educating your parents about common scams and how to recognize them is a crucial step to protecting their finances.

Strategies to Prevent Inessential Giving
Open Communication
Maintaining open and honest communication with your parents is essential. Discuss your concerns about their financial behaviour in a non-confrontational manner. Explain how giving away money can impact their financial security and stress the importance of preserving their resources for future needs.
Set Up Financial Safeguards
Consider implementing financial safeguards to protect your parent’s assets. This can include setting up joint bank accounts, appointing a trusted family member as a financial power of attorney, or establishing a trust. These measures can help monitor and control their financial transactions, keeping your mind at ease knowing their money is used wisely.
Educate About Scams
Education is a powerful tool in preventing financial exploitation. Teach your parents about common scams and how to identify them. Encourage them to verify the legitimacy of any requests for money and to consult with you or another trusted individual before making any financial decisions. The Federal Trade Commision (FTC) offers resources and guidelines on recognizing and avoiding scams, which can be helpful in your discussions.
Provide Emotional Support
Addressing the emotional needs of your elderly parent can reduce their inclination to give away money. Regular visits, phone calls, and engaging in activities together can alleviate feelings of loneliness and provide the companionship they seek. Additionally, consider involving them in social groups or activities within their community, such as those offered at Peregrine Senior Living Guilderland, to enhance their social interactions and emotional well-being.
Seek Professional Advice
Sometimes, professional intervention is necessary. Consulting with a financial advisor who specializes in elder care can provide valuable insights and strategies for managing your parent’s finances. Seeking legal advice to set up appropriate financial safeguards can warrant their assets will be protected.
